Children learn about an energy efficient, sustainable future

Miss Earth SA regional finalist Carmen Loureiro has been out-and-about visiting schools in the Germiston area.

The children at both Wychwood Primary and Sunnyridge Primary are learning about going green.

They were recently visited by Miss Earth South Africa regional finalist Carmen Loureiro, who chatted to them about energy conservation and sustainability.

“As Miss Earth South Africa regional finalists we are given a number of projects focused on educating the youth about sustainability, water and energy conservation, and the preservation of the earth’s scarce natural resources,” said Carmen.

“My first project took place at Wychwood Primary School, where a group of very enthusiastic students participated in a bean-planting project.

“The aim of this project is to educate the pupils about sustainability and food security, by teaching them to grow red speckled beans in a glass jar.

“The excitement and joy on the children’s faces was a treat to see.

“It is a pleasure working with children who are willing to learn with such eagerness, as they are our hope for a sustainable future.”

Carmen’s second project took place at Sunnyridge Primary.

Here the students participated in the energy project, where they learnt about energy conservation and the importance of saving electricity.

“A lively group of children, who were very eager to answer questions and learn about new ways to sustain our energy, greeted me,” said Carmen.

“The pupils were asked to write a letter to Switch, the Miss Earth South Africa energy efficiency mascot, with their pledges to be energy-conscious consumers.

“They were a very enthusiastic group of pupils who, I am sure, will share what they have learnt with others.

“It was an absolute pleasure working with passionate and caring children.”
