Development sports at the Germiston Stadium

Students across the country unite for South Africa's greatest kick-off.

The Transnet Rural and Farm Schools Tournament, now in its 12th year, will see South Africa’s most skilled sporting stars come together in a three-day event, from October 6 to 8, at the Germiston Stadium.

South Africa’s young athletes will fight it out for the top spot in netball, athletics, football and chess matches.

This prestigious event will be attended by dignitaries, sport celebrities, leaders in the sports and education industries and Transnet executives, to support a growing and changing South Africa.

The annual sporting event begins with more than 22 000 students from across the country, putting their talents and training to the test by competing in inter-house competitions.

After months of hard work and competitions, just 2 000 of the students make it to the final Transnet Rural and Farm Schools Tournament.

“Each year we host this competition and we see greater and inspiring results,” said Transnet Foundation’s senior sports manager, Michael Moloto.

“There is an amazing, positive spirit among students and coaches, and we can see that they are motivated to win and do well.

“At Transnet, we are very happy and proud to help South African students in this incredible journey from grassroots to glory.”

Over the years, the tournament has grown and become a rewarding opportunity for all those involved.

The programme has seen a number of its students win sporting scholarships and being selected for national sports teams and regional soccer programmes.

The festivities will kick off on October 6, at 5pm, with the opening ceremony that will feature inspiring speakers and entertainment.

The recently introduced sporting code, chess, was added for its benefits and cognitive development.

The games are played by girls and boys between the ages of 13 and 19, all coached by trained staff.

Over the three days competitors, scouts and dignitaries will witness up-and-coming sports talent in all four codes.
