Man gets 15 years for attempted robbery

Long prison sentence for would-be robber.

A good relationship between the Elsburg police and a robbery victim recently led to the arrest of an habitual criminal.

Elsburg police spokesman Const Daphney Phooko said Nxele Mzwandile (35) was sentenced to 15 years in prison when he appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court.

On February 16, last year, a 28-year-old man was on duty at the Elsburg Railway Station when he was approached by an armed man, who pointed a firearm at him.

“The armed man demanded his cellphone but the victim realised that his assailant was struggling to use the firearm, so called for assistance from a colleague,” said Phooko.

“They managed to apprehend Mzwandile and took him to the Elsburg Police Station, where he was arrested and the firearm confiscated as evidence.”

Mzwandile was sentenced in the Germiston Magistrates Court, recently, to 15 years imprisonment for attempted robbery.
