Students cause trouble

Dawnview High School students come under fire from local business owners.

Residents of Dawnview are outraged with the behaviour of some of the students of Dawnview High School.

A local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the GCN that these students have been causing a number of problems in the area.

“The students can often be seen hanging around in front of the café in Association Road,” she said

“These children are often seen smoking both cigarettes and dagga, and even consuming alcohol.

“On numerous occasions taxis have stopped in the road with blaring music and can be seen “partying” with the students.”

Elaine Iaaths, who owns Aphrodite’s Hair Salon, has confirmed these reports and added that the students, have on occasion, even started arguments with local store owners.

Both women feel that the school and local SAPS are doing nothing to control the situation.

The GCN contacted both Dawnview High School and the Primrose Police Station to find out more about the situation and what steps are being taken to bring the unruly students under control.

Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police, issued the following statement:

“This is an on-going situation and is receiving on-going attention from the Primrose police.

“Regular patrols are conducted at the said street, which is the centre of both Dawnview High School and Hoërskool Vryburger High School.

“In the past learners have been arrested for a number of reasons.

“As police we have requested that the EMPD help us with the taxis that stop there, playing loud music.

“From my understanding the school is on board with our prevention measures and has sent teachers to monitor the area every morning.

“We have seen these teachers during our regular patrols there in the mornings.”

At the time of going to press, Dawnview High had not yet responded to the GCN’s queries.

  1. If you think Association Rd is bad you should be in Wingate ave (where DVHS back gate is located) at the end of a school day. it is a small road and we can have up to 40 taxis in this rd. Music Blares, litter (including alcohol bottles) are thrown everywhere and any complaints we send to DVHS falls on deaf ears. We have had taxis even block our driveway preventing us from entering our own property. Taxi driver often ignore us or are very rude should we request they move or put their music softer.

  2. I live very close to Vryburger High School in Primrose and the same things happen here. They have no respect for their school and the uniform that they wear. We are educating a bunch of juvenile delinquents. I wonder if their parents know what they get up to or do they even care.Complaining to the principal does not help.My pavement is constantly littered with alcohol bottles, condoms, litter and cough mixture bottles(which is used as their fix). I have given up complaining because the pupils then stone, grafitti and egg your house. disgruntled and disgusted.

  3. Hi Cathy, which street are you referring to. So we can investigate, the problem with vryburger students.

    Thank you
