Woodmere mess frustrates residents

Residents in Woodmere are tired of looking at a mess on a daily basis.

Residents of Woodmere are tired of looking at the same messy sight every day.

The pavement area of a vacant house on the corner of Coral and Laurel streets is a terrible eyesore for them.

Building rubble fills the pavement and, where there is a bit of space, the grass grows long and unkept.

Illegal dumping has also started taking place at the site.

The residents, as well as the GCN have brought the matter to the attention of the council a number of times but nothing gets done about it.

The GCN first asked council for comment about the problem in 2012 and then again this year, but none has been forthcoming.

A woman who lives near the house, told the GCN that the property has been in this state for the last two years.

Although she has complained to council every month for two years, her complaints fall on deaf ears.

“The only response I have received from the municipally is that they are taking legal action against the owner,” she said.

“For the last two years?

“I think that is a lie.

“They keep telling me that the legal department is backlogged and I will have to be patient.”

The resident told the GCN that because of the filth and rubbish residents in the area now have a mouse and rat problem.

“Also, during the rainy season, the grass gets so overgrown that you are scared because you might be hijacked as people could use the grass as a hiding place,” she said.

“On many occasions my husband has even cut the grass.”

The resident also claimed that there are now young people who come and sit on the steps of the house and smoke drugs.

Residents in the area think it is time for action to be taken.

“The metro needs to do something about the property immediately,” the resident said.
