Armed robbers target reaction officer

Local reaction officer injured by armed robbers.

A reaction officer from SW Security was slightly injured by armed robbers, on June 19.

One of the company’s vehicles was stationed in the parking area of a shopping centre in Lambton, at about 6.25am, when the reaction officer, Marno Viviers, noticed a new grey/black VW Polo speeding past him and stopping.

The vehicle contained five occupants.

One of the occupants exited the vehicle, carrying an R5/R4 assault rifle, and immediately discharged two rounds at Viviers.

The rounds went through the left and right windows of the patrol vehicle.

One of the bullets went through Viviers’s cap, grazing the skin on his head.

He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and a trauma councillor treated him for shock.

The occupants of the car then robbed a store at the centre and fled.

The Germiston SAPS were contacted and rushed to the scene.

WO André de Jager, the spokesman for the Germiston SAPS, said that no arrests with regard to the attempted murder or business robbery had yet been made.

“A 32-year-old man has, however, been arrested on a charge of defeating the ends of justice, as he gave a false statement about what happened on that particular morning,” de Jager said.

The police are continuing with their investigations.
