Youngsters play sport

Ekurhuleni Masakhane Community Games a great success.

The Germiston Sport Council, in collaboration with Sport Recreation Arts and Culture (SRAC) Ekurhuleni, hosted the third annual Ekurhuleni Masakhane Community Games, recently, at the Germiston Stadium.

Sports fanatics came out in numbers to showcase their talents and enjoy a fairly warm day of sports.

The Masakhane Games are a community-based programme of all types of sporting codes, such as soccer, rugby, volleyball, basketball and netball, to name a few.

The games focus on building social cohesion and increasing interest in sports.

“The essence of the games being held in June is to celebrate Youth Month, by encouraging Ekurhuleni’s youth to participate in sporting activities,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

“Sport plays a pivotal role in the development of viable human beings, as it is through sport that a sense of belonging is created, responsibility is learnt and self-confidence is built, thus the City of Ekurhuleni is investing in building community participation in sports.”

Another important aim of the programme is to create awareness of new sporting codes, and it’s aimed mainly at youngsters, 15 years and younger.

“The programme also seeks to promote healthy living, curb obesity and reduce the high rate of pregnancy and drug abuse amongst young people in Ekurhuleni,” added Gadebe.
