Youngsters clean up park

Children show their commitment to the environment.

The Environment Club members from Germiston South Primary School recently embarked on a clean-up operation.

The 45 pupils visited the park opposite Epworth Children’s Village, in Lambton.

The children kitted themselves out with gloves, rakes and garden refuse bags, donated by Builders Express, in Lambton, and set to work with great enthusiasm.

They used dustpans and rakes to clean up the difficult areas, where broken glass was found.

The clean-up was aimed at ridding the park of rubbish and, within an hour, 30 large refuse bags were filled with litter.

As part of the Environment Club, the pupils pledged to take care of the environment, which was evident on this day.

The school is proud of them.

Germiston South Primary’s concern with the park is that children play there and the metro and the ward councillor should make a concerted effort to improve the park.

The school feels there should be park benches and more swings, slides and playground equipment for children to play on.

Another suggestion is that a wide-paved track be laid around the perimeter of the park, where parents can walk with their prams, or it could be a demarcated bicycle or jogging track.

The pupils have put these ideas to the metro for action and comment.
