Senior citizens treated to special day

Elderly enjoy a fun-filled outing to Hoërskool Elspark.

It was all about fun at Hoërskool Elspark recently, when the school held its annual senior citizens day.

This year was extra special, as it marked the 21st birthday of the event.

Elderly residents from Germiston and Boksburg were treated to a fun-filled day of games, prizes and good food, and 147 people attended the event.

The homes involved were: SAVF Kinross Herberg, SAVF Die Anker, SAVF Della Villa, Scribanti – Boksburg, Strelitzia – Boksburg, Elsburg Kuierkring, Silwerjare – Elsburg, NG Elspark, SAVF Kowa Pienaar, NG Lambton and Witfield Park Retirement Home.

The event was run by the newly elected prefects for 2014, supervised by the staff.

After playing 10 individual games, where they were scored, the senior citizens got into teams of four (men’s, women’s and mixed teams) and had to complete an obstacle course.

While playing the games, the prefects made sure the competitors were kept going by supplying them with cold drinks, sweets and biscuits.

After the games, the guests retired to the school hall, where the winners of the individual games received a certificate and a medal and the winning team members each received a certificate and a small trophy.

A big team trophy was also presented to them for display at their retirement homes.

The three oldest men and three oldest women present also received a gift donated by members of the Hoërskool Elspark staff, and every elderly person who attended the day was given a gift made by Adrienne Lubbe, the scrapbooking teacher.

This year the gift was two picture frames, to be used as fridge magnets.

The seniors were then treated to a delicious lunch prepared by members of staff.

The annual day is made possible by generous donations from the pupils, parents, members of the community and local businesses.
