Primrose centre caring for children with disabilities needs financial support

This home for children with disabilities is not just a facility. It is a lifeline for many who have nowhere else to go

Rekopane, meaning “We are together,” is an inclusive development centre located in Primrose that provides a home for children with severe disabilities.

Founded by Snooky Kau in 2008, the centre emerged in response to a significant gap in care for children with profound disabilities.

Snooky noted that these children often get lost in the system, as they require around-the-clock support.

Currently accommodating 26 children aged three to 18, the centre also houses older teens due to a shortage of facilities catering to children with disabilities.

“We sometimes keep them longer while looking for suitable placements,” Snooky explained.

Despite its vital role, the centre is facing dire financial challenges, exacerbated by cuts to departmental grants.

“The funding we receive is insufficient to cover our operational costs,” Snooky stated.

A pressing issue is the lack of physiotherapy equipment, which is crucial for enhancing mobility and overall quality of life for the children.

Without proper resources, meeting the children’s needs has become increasingly difficult.

Additionally, the centre struggles with security concerns, particularly for vulnerable residents with limited mobility.

Snooky expressed the need for enhanced safety measures, including surveillance systems and alarms, after a recent theft incident.

“We need an electric fence for added security,” she said.

The financial difficulties extend beyond equipment and security; the centre also battles to maintain daily operations.

Limited resources force the home to make tough decisions, sometimes resulting in staff reductions and delays in essential services.

As a result, staff members, despite their dedication, often struggle to provide the one-on-one attention and care each child deserves.

Snooky is appealing to the community and local businesses for assistance.

“We invite them to visit the home, see the work we do, and understand our needs,” she urged.

“This centre is not just a facility; it is a lifeline for many children who have nowhere else to turn.

“Without immediate financial support, we may be forced to close, leaving our residents without necessary care.”
