CGA announces team to lead SA at Paris Olympics

Among the athletes is Gerda Steyn, recently confirmed as the seventh representative from the province after resolving domicile issues with KZN Athletics and Athletics South Africa.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) has revealed the seven athletes who will represent Team South Africa at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The announcement follows a successful send-off event held on July 10 at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel.

Among the athletes is Gerda Steyn, recently confirmed as the seventh representative from the province after resolving domicile issues with KZN Athletics and Athletics South Africa.

CGA acting president Karabo Mabilo highlighted the participation of Steyn and Cian Oldknow in the women’s marathon, which this year will be the final event of the Games.

The competition schedule for the athletes is as follows:
• Ryan Mphahlele: 1500m
• Akani Simbine: 100m and 100m relay
• Lythe Pillay: 400m and 400m relay
• Chesswill Johnson: Long jump
• Kyle Blignaut: Shot put
• Gerda Steyn: Women’s marathon
• Cian Oldknow: Women’s marathon
Mabilo underscored that the Olympic Games are a celebration of excellence and not solely about winning medals.

“The send-off event was an opportunity to honour our athletes and inspire emerging talent across the province,” Mabilo said.

“We urge all development athletes and clubs to use this as motivation to discover and nurture new talent.”

In the lead-up to the Games, CGA will conduct daily campaigns celebrating each athlete. Mabilo also extended congratulations to Akani Simbine for being nominated as the flag bearer for Team South Africa.
