House fire incidents on the rise alarming – DEMS

Fire department spokesperson William Ntladi provided several fire safety tips for homes and businesses.

The Ekurhuleni Fire Department is urging residents to adopt safe fire practices this winter as house fires continue to rise.

This appeal comes after a house fire was reported in Elsburg, which, fortunately, resulted in no casualties.

Fire department spokesperson William Ntladi detailed the incident, noting that the fire engulfed a four-roomed outbuilding flat in Elsburg early Wednesday morning.

“Local fire services received an alarm exactly at six o’clock in the morning, and fire crews from Boksburg and Germiston central fire stations swiftly responded. Upon arrival, all rooms were engulfed by flames, and part of the roof had already collapsed,” said Ntladi.

Despite the extensive damage, no other structures were affected.

Ntladi emphasised the importance of fire prevention, pointing out common causes such as unattended pots on stoves, veld fires, and electrical faults.

He noted that while there is a growing awareness of fire safety, more efforts are needed.

“Fires can smolder undetected for hours and suddenly explode, engulfing the house. Every possible precaution must be taken to minimise risks,” he said.

Winter increases the danger of house fires due to electricity shortages, drier air, overloaded power sockets, and the use of indoor fireplaces.

From June to August, the incidence of fires peaks as residents use heaters and light indoor fires.

Ntladi provided several fire safety tips for homes and businesses:

• Display emergency numbers: Clearly display emergency numbers near telephones for quick access.

• Identify fire hazards: Check for thatched roofs, exposed electrics, flammable liquids, and gas cylinders, and take action to minimise risks.

• Use fire-resistant materials: Ensure all roofing materials are fire-resistant when buying, building, or renovating.

• Install smoke detectors: Smoke detectors provide early warning of potential fires. Consider linking them to alarm systems for automatic alerts to security companies.

• Purchase fire extinguishers: Keep fire extinguishers visible and ensure they are regularly serviced.

• Maintain gutters: Clean gutters regularly to prevent dry leaves and needles from catching fire.

• Avoid overloading sockets: Do not overload electrical sockets or run cords under carpets.

• Remove dry branches: If you live near a veld, remove any dry branches overhanging your property and consider creating a fire break.

• Store combustibles safely: Keep firewood and other combustibles away from your home and secure dustbin lids.

• Have an evacuation plan: Ensure everyone knows the quickest escape route and the location of fire extinguishers and blankets.

• Never re-enter during a fire: If clothing catches fire, stop, drop, and roll. Only tackle the fire if it is safe to do so.

“I urge all residents and business owners to proactively fireproof their premises before an incident occurs,” said Ntladi.
