Watch: One dies in Germiston old age home fire and 50 others evacuated

Emergency services worked hard to contain the blaze and managed to save 70% of the building.

Residents of Die Anker Tehuis old age home in Germiston found themselves homeless after a large section of the home burnt down.

Emergency services responded to the incident after the building caught fire at about 8:45 today, July 11. One person has died and more than 50 residents were evacuated.

The home is looking to place the elderly in temporary accommodation.

Firefighters contained the blaze and managed to save 70% of the building, however, it remains a no-go zone as its structural integrity is a concern.

Emergency services responded to the incident after the building caught alight around 8.45 this morning.

At least 30 elderly residents have been displaced and were transported to a nearby school where they are being safely held while the home makes the necessary arrangements.
