Neglect of Victoria Lake concerns residents

There is growing concern among residents regarding the lack of maintenance and care of this once-cherished natural treasure.

Victoria Lake in Germiston, once a beloved destination for families, has become a glaring example of neglect.

Once known for its serene waters and scenic beauty, the lake is now characterised by overgrown grass and litter.

“It is disappointing to see a place that was once a beautiful space for families and community falling apart and nothing seems to be done,” said resident Quintus van Vliet.

“Where must residents now go to relax and enjoy the outdoors?”

The fence by the front gate of Victoria Lake has been broken for over five months and still not been fixed.

The decline of Victoria Lake has been gradual but stark.

“We used to come here when I was young with my family, and it was always clean and well-maintained. I was disappointed with a recent visit,” said Thandeka Nkosi.

She noted broken play equipment and poorly managed grass.

“The grass was so tall and even where it was cut, it was not properly collected.”

Van Vliet observed a steady deterioration in the lake’s upkeep, a sentiment echoed by many.

Tony Gordon, the organiser of a parkrun, highlighted serious issues last year, including sewage from old toilets contaminating the grass, pathways, and the lake, posing health risks to runners.

Despite numerous emails to the city, he received no response.

During a recent visit, Germiston City News confirmed the poor maintenance, noting a damaged fence near the entrance that had been unrepaired for months, a non-functional fountain at the main entrance, and overall subpar upkeep.

Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, stated: “Grass cutting and maintenance of Germiston Lake is an ongoing programme every month.

“This commenced on May 13. The gate was repaired but got vandalised again. The division is aware of the gym equipment needing repairs and is awaiting the tender to fix all gym equipment throughout the city.”

Dlamini urged the community to care for these facilities, emphasising its benefit to residents.
Despite his assurances, the state of Victoria Lake remains a cause for concern.
