Watch: Uncertainty surrounds fate of Ekurhuleni mayor and Speaker facing votes of no confidence

Democratic Alliance files a motion against Speaker alleging she protects EFF councillors.

Update at 15:17: The ANC has withdrawn its amendments, while the DA still seeks consideration for theirs. However, ActionSA rejects the amendments proposed by both parties, fearing they may disrupt council proceedings due to the significant changes they entail.

Reported earlier:

In today’s council meeting in Ekurhuleni, the fate of Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana and council Speaker Nthabiseng Tshivhenga hangs in the balance as they face imminent votes of no confidence.

Mayor Ngodwana finds himself targeted by a motion from ActionSA, which has loomed over him for the past three council meetings, marred by interruptions.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has filed a motion against Speaker Tshivhenga, alleging her protection of fellow EFF councillors accused of assaulting African National Congress (ANC) members during a February council session.

Siyanda Makhubo, leader of the ActionSA caucus, sees these motions as opportunities to unsettle the ANC-EFF administration at the municipal level.

Council proceedings faced a delay as the ANC called for a 30-minute caucus.

However, tensions rose as the ANC requested to prioritize certain agenda items before addressing the impending motions.

The DA countered, arguing that the speaker lacks the authority to alter the meeting’s order once it commences.
Despite objections, the speaker ruled in favour of reshuffling the agenda.
