Burst pipe leads to more problems for local residents

"My concern was with the elders during that period of water being cut off," said Guerreiro.

Laurel Street resident Maxine Matthew raised concerns about a water leak that ruined her driveway.

The problem emerged hours after City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) technicians attended to a water burst at the corner of her property on March 19.

She said in the early hours of the same morning, water pressure was low and she heard a loud sound of water from outside.

“When I drove out of my driveway, I saw the water gushing up like a fountain and reported it. But later, when I came from work, I found it fixed, but my driveway was damaged,” said Matthew.

Water coming from underneath, lifting the pavement.

“Water came from underneath the driveway pavement and ran down the street. Walking in the driveway felt like it was going to submerge; it felt unsafe,” said Matthew.

Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro said because of water repairs taking place in the morning, residents’ water was off for almost the entire day.

“Areas like Sunnyridge, Marlands, Gerdview and Wychwood had no water. The city provided no tanks during that period. My concern was with the elderly during that period of water being cut off,” said Guerreiro.

“The city dispatched a second team to attend to the driveway problem,” said Guerreiro.

The GCN sent a request for comment to the CoE media team on March 19, requesting a reply on March 20 at 12h00. By the time of going to print, we received no comment.
