Former Germiston cop expresses his love for dogs

He said that he trained dogs at the SAPS dog unit before he retired.

Dewald Bezuidenhout (60), a former dog handler for the SAPS, shared his love for dogs.

He recently retired after he spent 42 years as a police officer.

One of his regular pastimes is taking his two-year-old dog, Sergeant, on daily walks between Elsburg and Lambton.

He said he trained dogs at the SAPS dog unit before he retired.

“Being around dogs is enjoyable and they are affectionate. What you give them, they return the favour,” said Bezuidenhout.

“Sergeant is my daughter’s closest friend. He always spends time with her after school. He occasionally sleeps in her room. She is in a wheelchair and I am training him for her,” said Bezuidenhout.

According to Bezuidenhout, some people instil an aggressive behaviour in their dogs, such as training them to fight other dogs. He said that while there are no bad dogs, there are bad dog owners.

“Love your dog and it will return the favour. I bring refreshments for both of us on our walks,” said Bezuidenhout.

He advised dog owners that the best age to start training a dog is from 18 months.
