Germiston SAPS educate locals on GBV

They first went to the taxi rank and the second part focused on door-to-door visits.

Germiston SAPS and other stakeholders held a parade at the Dukathole taxi rank in Germiston on October 25.

Sergeant Mpho Mokgawa said their purpose was to create awareness and educate the community about gender-based violence.

“As long we still have cases of GBV, awareness and education remain essential to inform communities on how to report it,” said Mokgawa.

They divided the programme into two sections.

They first went to the taxi rank and the second part focused on door-to-door visits.

She said the walks, parade and every effort made by different stakeholders are vital.

Mokgawa encouraged the community to take these opportunities and educate themselves about the help they can get.

She also said as police, they face challenges in GBV cases as victims often drop charges against the offenders.

“Victims close the cases out of fear and financial support. The perpetrator has some hold over them and they become scared,” said Mokgawa.

Members from Germiston and Primrose SAPS, Department of Social Development, NGOs, GBV brigades, Amapanyaza and Ekurhuleni clinical forensic medical services from Bertha Gxowa Care Centre were part of the parade.
