Criminals target Germiston businesses to steal tyres and rims

Tyres are often kept in areas where alarms are not triggered, allowing the suspects to go undetected.

Robbers are targeting businesses and stealing truck tyres and rims, especially in Germiston and Alrode.

Charnel Hattingh from Fidelity ADT said incidents reported mostly occurred in the early hours of the morning.

“In some instances tyres are being kept in areas where alarms are not triggered, allowing the suspects to go undetected. Business owners need to consider installing beams or other early detection devices,” said Hattingh.

Another risk is electric fencing that is not maintained. Businesses often have to to run electric fences off generators which does not generate enough power.

Business owners are encouraged to maintain their perimeter security.

Perimeter security tips worth taking note of:

• Ensure that your gate opens and closes as quickly as possible. The motor must have a locked box covering it to stop any attempts at tampering.

• Bushes and trees must not affect perimeter security. Branches should be cut back to prevent blocking or impeding the effective functioning of your perimeter security, or where they may be used to climb into and access your property.

• Beams must be installed correctly and at the most optimal angle to increase their range and effectiveness.

They must not be obscured by shrubbery, or near reflective surfaces to prevent excessive false alarm activations.

• Service your security system on a regular basis. Have your alarm serviced at least once a year and test your security system at least once a month. Walk around your property and look for possible access points to your property and roof. If you suspect there are vulnerable areas, call in a security expert to help find solutions.
