Elsburg CPF warns scooter drivers of hijackings

“The reason they are targeted is unknown. It might be because of the money the drivers carry, the food they deliver, or the bikes they ride.”

The Elsburg CPF advised scooter delivery drivers to be cautious when delivering meals to customers.

This warning followed the CPF’s recovery of a hijacked motorbike.

Johan Lourens, the chairperson of the Elsburg CPF, highlighted the concern.

According to him, a resident on Mare Street called the CPF on August 21 to report the hijacking of a delivery man’s motorbike.

“The patrol team arrived at the site, and as they made their way to Mare Street, they passed the bike on another street. The driver gave his account of events. The patrolling crew escorted him to where they last saw the bike.

“The pizzas were untouched. The bike’s chain was broken, and the keys were missing. I think they had to dump the bike after the chain broke,” said Lourens.

According to him, there was an increase in motorbike hijackings in Tedstoneville and Elsburg.

“The reason they are targeted is unknown. It might be because of the money the drivers carry, the food they deliver, or the bikes they ride.

“We advise consumers to exercise caution when leaving home to pick up goods. Be especially cautious when a scooter is being pursued by a car. These days, a white VW Polo is on the road making suspicious rounds.

“To patrol the area, we are collaborating with the SAPS. Buhle Park has more murders, Tedstoneville has more rapes, and Elspark has more burglaries.

“The patrol wardens are also assisting in patrolling, and we have received encouraging comments from the community about their efforts,” said Lourens.

Lourens added that a local company assisted the CPF in securing and safeguarding the power station on Maritz Street.
