Women in golf celebrated for their excellence
The tournament was played over three days at Ebotse Links and BCC. It started with a four-ball alliance competition on May 22 with the championship following on May 23 and 24.
Janice Brownlee will have her name engraved on the wooden-base silver claret jug trophy after winning the 28th South African Senior Women’s Golf Championship held at Benoni Country Club (BCC) and Ebotse Links from May 22 to 24.

But it was the Ekurhuleni Senior Women’s Golf (ESWG)’s Sonja Louw who was left stunned after being declared the Stableford championship winner during the prize-giving ceremony at BCC on May 24.
Louw went home with her hands full following an overhaul of four accolades that included the 60-69 36-hole nett Stableford title and being overall C division Stableford championship winner.
She was also part of Ekurhuleni’s Chicks ‘n Sticks team that were runners-up in the team event.
“I didn’t expect to win because there are so many ladies here and they play so well,” she said.
“The last round at Ebotse was much better. I started very bad on the first nine and on the second nine I picked up and managed to score and win. I have to say that the course at BCC was a little forgiving than Ebotse.

“I’m proud to be part of the team and glad I’ve contributed to the team and got some winnings for them,” Louw said.
Brownlee, from Clarens in the Free State, was declared the division A 36-holes winner after grossing 165 points overall.
She also won the division’s 36-hole nett after netting 145 points overall which earned her the championship trophy.
She commented that it’s a great achievement which she has worked towards since she started playing the game, adding she was happy to have won the trophy for her province.
“Yesterday at Ebotse, it was a difficult day. It was cold, windy and blustery but luckily I managed to hang in there. Today, I had a brilliant day with awesome playing partners and I managed to win.
“It’s something I’ve looked forward to, especially in my senior years. I didn’t play much golf when I was young. Now that I’m a senior, I’ve done something I’ve always aspired to,” she said.
Brownlee’s dominance also included the four-ball alliance with her team on May 22.

The secretary of the Senior Women’s Golf of South Africa, Ros de Klerk commended ESWG president Charmaine Stone and her team of volunteers for organising a successful tournament.
“We are appreciative of everything that was done. I would like congratulate the green keepers for what they presented to the ladies over the past two days. Everyone at both courses went an extra-mile for us, which was tremendous.
“We salute Charmaine and her team. You are a fantastic group to work with and everything was well-prepared. Well done,” De Klerk said.
An emotional Stone thanked BCC and Ebotse and all volunteers for all their work post and during the tournament.
“I’ve got such a good team behind me. Everything went so smoothly.
“As a leader, if you don’t have a good team, there’s no way you are going to make an event this large go as smoothly as it did. I thank the committee and all the volunteers for making this the success it was,” she said.
