SANDF deployed to Germiston following shooting between illegal miners and waste reclaimers

Simmer and Jack Landfill closed as CoE describes the situation as "serious".

City of Ekurhuleni reported that the South African National Defence Force has been deployed to the Simmer and Jack Landfill Site in Germiston following a shooting incident between illegal miners and waste reclaimers.

“The situation is so serious that the city has taken a decision to temporarily close the facility and allow the military to stabilise the situation,” said City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“Once the situation has stabilised the city will inform users and the public in general accordingly.

“Waste removal trucks are currently being redirected to the Platkop landfill site, near Vosloorus to offload until the Simmer and Jack facility re-opens,” said Dlamini.

“The city pleads for patience from customers and residents alike as this current situation is likely to affect waste removal services across the city,” said Dlamini.
