Germiston elders receive food garden to encourage sustainable urban gardening

Elderly home in Primrose receives a backyard garden.

Cora Erasmus retirement flats at Roos Street Primrose was the recipient of a food garden donation to encourage sustainable urban gardening.
With the cost of living becoming high, this gardening initiative will see residents cut costs on fresh produce.
The initiative was sponsored by Cass and Belinda Davis from Home Growers and Garden Group Community which encourages sustainable urban gardening dedicated to edible and sustainable living.

This project was driven by Lovelle and Craig Wright who approached the residents of Cora Erasmus to get the garden up and running with further sponsors Garth Jack from UIM.
“The garden has homegrown vegetables that can be used by the residents to live a healthier lifestyle. The ribbon was cut by Elizabeth Maas who has undertaken to water the garden regularly,” said Ward 36 Clr Wendy Morgan.
“The residents are encouraged to look after the garden and do the weeding. This project will make our elderly lives easier and force them to be more active with garden chores,” said Morgan.
“I also encourage residents to look at ways to utilise small spaces to grow their own vegetables,” said Morgan.
