The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) confirmed an EMPD officer died after he was hit by a speeding vehicle on the morning of February 13.

According to information received, the officer was part of a team conducting law-enforcement duties at the R24/N3 split Gillooly’s when he was struck.

The officer, who works for the EMPD’s Freeway Unit, was hit while attempting to stop a vehicle travelling in the left lane.

The CoE stated that the driver of the VW Polo involved in the incident fled the scene of the accident and was pursued by fellow officers.

The driver was later apprehended in Johannesburg.

He was arrested and detained at Bedfordview Police Station and charged with culpable homicide, fleeing the scene of an accident and reckless and negligent driving.
