Residents were without power since November 8.

The power outages angered the residents who took their frustrations to the streets to protest on Monday night. Resident Lantana Howell said the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is not telling the truth about the restoration times for power outages.

“The power was supposed to be on at 15:30 but still nothing,” Howell stated on Wednesday.

“Residents are losing ridiculous amounts of food and some rely on medical equipment. Some of us work from home and lose money if we can’t work,” explained Howell.

“We need answers. We need help and no one is here for us,” said Howell.

Among other issues faced by this community is the issue of illegal buildings that have become crime hot spots.
CoE, when asked how city planning plans to address illegal buildings, replied that property owners are issued contravention notices to comply by submitting building plans for consideration.

“This is issued for all the illegal buildings activities that are brought to our attention and discovered by the building inspectors when doing their inspections,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“Failure to comply will result in the matter being referred to the legal department for litigation.”

GCN also requested comment from CoE on power outages in Cruywagen Park by November 10 at 09:00.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
