Santa Shoebox helpers lend a hand

The group sorted through, checked and packed thousands of Santa Shoeboxes donated by community members and schools.

Volunteers and representatives from the Santa Shoebox Project came together in Meadowdale to help sort and pack parcels donated towards the national initiative.

On October 30, the volunteers and representatives from the project worked together in the warehouse of Cargo Compass SA.

The group sorted through, checked and packed thousands of Santa Shoeboxes donated by community members and schools.

Johannesburg East representative for the project Cassidee Nel explained that the volunteers checked the boxes to ensure everything was in order.

She said that once approved, the boxes are packed into boxes that are transported to the relevant beneficiary organisations.

Cassidee said the Santa Shoeboxes are all donated to children in need.

She said each shoebox donated contained eight essential items for the children receiving them.

Items in the box included toothpaste, a toothbrush, a bar of soap, a washcloth, an outfit of clothing, educational supplies, some sweets and a toy.

Over the past 15 years, the project, which started in Cape Town in 2006 with only 180 shoeboxes, has grown exponentially.

According to the project’s website, 1 017 741 children in SA and Namibia have been assisted through the generosity of the donors and the work it does

Managing director of Cargo Compass SA Sebastiano Iorio said it was humbling to be a part of the project.

“When you see the children’s reaction when they get the gift, it is an amazing feeling,” highlighted Sebastiano.

Cassidee thanked donors, sponsors and Sebastiano for the assistance.
