Makopano tournament honours players who died of Covid-19

The Makopano tournament is played in the spirit of sportsmanship and also dedicated the “legends” that the participating clubs have lost to Covid-19.

Elsburg Rugby Club (ERC) hosted the inaugural match of the Makopano Tournament on August 28.

The friendly tournament will in conclusion award the winners with a trophy and cash price.

The tournament is played in the spirit of sportsmanship and is also dedicated to the “legends” that the participating clubs have lost to Covid-19.

ERC communication person Jolandie Konig said the players were eager to get back on the field as last year’s Valke League ended prematurely.

“This tournament is a great opportunity for the clubs’ teams to get back in shape while remembering those who we lost during the 2020/21 rugby season,” said Konig.

Four clubs are participating in the tournament, Boksburg Rugby Club, Elsburg Rugby Club, Springs Rugby Club and Witbank Rugby Club.

“The team format is first team, second team will be a combined team (Barbarians) with u-20 players so that they can be introduced to the open format of the game. The 7’s will also make up for the full u-20 compliment,” said Konig.

Elsburg lost three games played on the day.

“It was tough games and it was the first time Elsburg played against Witbank,” said Konig.
