The fishing enthusiast and her u-19 team members participated in the ninth SAFBAF Festival on April 17 and 18.

While catching fish is a pass time for some people, others, like Sylvie Richards (15), grew fond of the sport of angling and she now aims for her South African Protea colours.

The fishing enthusiast and her u-19 team members participated in the ninth South Africa Freshwater Bank Angling Federation (SAFBAF) Festival on April 17 and 18.

Sylvie’s mother, Georgia Richards, said the SAFBAF Festival is a national-level platform, where the best performers qualify for Protea colours.

“Sylvie is passionate about angling.” At the angling festival, eight teams battled it out on the banks of Biermans Vaaldam. “The teams who competed were the Best Ladies of Gauteng North B, SAFBAF C Blue, SAFBAF B Floaties, SAFBAF B Diegies, SAFBAF C Wits, Gauteng B, SAVOF Meesters Dames and SAFBAF Young Dames,” said Georgia.

Sylvie represented the SAFBAF Young Dames u-19 team.

“On day one, she netted a huge Grass Carp of 6.45kg and won her zone, which earned her the third-place best individual performance overall amongst 48 anglers as well as the second heaviest bag. “On day two, Sylvie and her team outperformed their opponents and took first place, earning themselves gold medals.
“Bearing in mind that all SAFBAF teams are a selection of the best anglers from the Ladies National Trials, we are very proud of her success and achievement,” said Georgina.
