St Catherine’s head of school encourages the Class of 2021

St Catherine’s head of school Dennis Maritz welcomed the Class of 2021 and gave them a message of encouragement for the year ahead.

“As I welcome you to school this morning, I saw the look of concern that furrowed your brows because of the upcoming maths test you were about to write. I was reminded of that first day four years ago when you started Grade Eight.

Then this morning’s look of concern was replaced by an expression of apprehension and uncertainty. But your eyes were bright and the nervous excitement, which you displayed was almost palpable. You have certainly come a long way,” said Maritz.

He encouraged the Class of 2021 to learn from last year’s matrics on how to handle the year under the new norms. “Covid-19 has dealt you a cruel hand. Like the Class of 2020, you have had to cope with disruption, uncertainty and anxiety.

I do not doubt that, like them, you will rise to the challenge and acquit yourselves with honour and distinction. They showed their mettle with the exceptional results they produced.

I am confident that you will do the same and that you will bring kudos to yourselves and your school,” said Maritz. He told the learners that the school staff are there to support them as they walk the final journey of their school career.

“I speak on behalf of the entire St Catherine’s family when I say that I trust in your abilities. You have the determination and commitment, not only to overcome the challenges posed by the virus but also to achieve excellent results in December.

I have faith that you will join the ranks of those from St. Catherine’s who have preceded you at our country’s top tertiary institutions.
To quote the American singer Will.I.am, you are “standing in the Hall of Fame”, hold your name and St Catherine’s reputation high,” said Maritz.
