Watch: Concerned parents gather at Hoërskool Elspark following incident of school violence

Parents questioned the school's management of the incident and called for metal detectors and counselling for learners affected by the incident.

Concerned parents gathered at Hoërskool Elspark earlier today when Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school following an incident of learner violence reported yesterday.

“It was revealed that the incident emanated from a lost cellphone belonging to a learner,” said GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona.

“It is alleged the violence started in the school premises and subsequently, two learners were allegedly stabbed. It is not clear who might have stabbed both learners,” said Mabona.

Parents questioned the school’s management of the incident and called for metal detectors and counselling for learners affected by the incident.

“The SGB launched an investigation which will lead to identification of the culprit and necessary disciplinary action will be taken.

“All allegations raised by parents, among others that there was a lack of care and assistance from the school employees, will also be investigated,” said Mabona.

Lesufi called on anyone who alleges that there is racism at the school to provide information.

“The MEC applauded the school for embracing change by accommodating English learners in the school,” said Mabona.

A report from the district and school will be presented to Lesufi.

“Our psycho social team has been dispatched to the school to support those affected by the incident. The school will also support learners who are currently hospitalised,” said Mabona.
