Karate is more than just a sport for du Toit

The Grade 11 learner from Totus Tuus Independent School started karate when he was in pre-school.

Karate has helped Cassidy du Toit to discover himself and helped improve his health.

“Since I started karate, I have learnt I am a headstrong person, which results in me rushing into things. Karate taught me discipline and to slow down and focus on what’s going on around me,” said du Toit.

The Grade 11 learner from Totus Tuus Independent School started karate when he was in pre-school.

His biggest achievement thus far is obtaining his black belt.

“I have no interest in any other sports. Karate has always been my first choice,” he said.

“Karate is not just about winning or self-defence. It also instills confidence and focus.

“I now understand the importance of keeping fit and having good self-esteem.

“I struggled with staying healthy due to having a weak chest. I used to fall ill very easily and it would take me a long time to recover.

“Karate helped me to become physically fit and active and that allowed me to heal faster.”
