UPDATE: Sand brought in to smother landfill fire (video)

According to Ward 36 Clr Wendy Morgan there is no timeline on when the fire will be extinguished.

It has been almost a week since the fire was reported and the Simmer and Jack Municipal Landfill is still burning. The blaze has been hard to safely extinguish as it on a hill of rubble.

According to media liaison of DEMS, Eric Maloka, on Saturday September 12, excavators, bulldozers and compacting machinery were brought into the dumping site.

“Sand was poured and compacted to smother the fire on Saturday and on Sunday extra machinery from Delmas was brought in,” said Maloka.

According to Ward 36 Clr Wendy Morgan there is no timeline on when the fire will be extinguished.

“No one knows what is still burning in all those layers but at least there is action.

“I would like to commend the DEMS department who have been on site since Tuesday working under very difficult circumstances as this is not a normal veld or house fire. Access to the fire has been extremely difficult,“ added Morgan.

“The cause of the fire is undetermined and investigations are ongoing,“ said Maloka.

City of Ekurhuleni announced the closure of the landfill until further notice on Wednesday, September 9.
