Zukiswa Qezu (31), a resident of Germiston CBD, was one of the many fitness devotees who could not wait to be back in their local gym.

Zukiswa Qezu (31), a resident of Germiston CBD, was one of the many fitness devotees who could not wait to be back in their local gym.

“It was the greatest feeling, I felt alive. After my workout, I got home and cried tears of joy. The following morning I experienced the wonderful soreness, it was total bliss,” said Zukiswa.

Zukiswa said it was difficult while gyms were closed.

“Luckily, you can use anything to exercise. I did bodyweight exercises to lift weights and keep fit.”

She explained how she became a fitness enthusiast.

“After I had my second child, I met an old friend. The friend said ‘dear utyebile’, which means you are overweight in isiXhosa.”

According to Zukiswa, it was a joke but it got to her.

“I started with short jogs around the complex in 2011. It was basically to lose weight and feel good. When I saw results I got hooked and have been at it since.”

The Germiston resident said she loves where she stays because it is central.

“There is affordable accommodation, we have a stadium just down the road, a lake, hospital, libraries and great schools. Germiston has everything one needs.”

She added her favourite hangout is the lake.

“It is a beautiful place to spend time with family and friends. We are a united community there.”

She said learning about African spirituality, astrology and tarot reading are among her favourite pastimes.

The administrator for a trucking company added she wants to own a women-only Crossfit gym in the future.

She also hopes to be the Face of Fitness 2020.

Zukiswa shared her opinion about the pandemic.

“Testing should be free and available to everyone. With companies closing down and the unemployment rate going up, I do not see anyone going for a R900 test when you can save that money for basic human needs.”

She added it is also people’s responsibility to stay home, wash hands, sanitise and practise social distancing.
