Know your ward councillor: de Beer talks about serving her community

Ward 39 includes Parkhill Gardens, Lambton, a portion of Delville, Hazel Park, Mimosa Park, Denlee, Estera, Elsburg, Dinwiddie and Wadeville.

Ward 39 Clr Alta de Beer is passionate about serving the community. A project manager by profession, she said her 24 years’ experience of working with communities made her realise what communities need in terms of service delivery.

Ward 39 includes Parkhill Gardens, Lambton, a portion of Delville, Hazel Park, Mimosa Park, Denlee, Estera, Elsburg, Dinwiddie and Wadeville.

“I became a ward councillor after I realised I could no longer sit on the sidelines and see how corruption is compromising people’s lives and welfare because money and resources are not directed to uplifting our communities. As a parent, I also have an obligation to ensure my children and their grandchildren can enjoy the resources of our beautiful country,” said de Beer.

She believes her leadership qualities can bring about change.

“I am a compassionate person. I can keep a cool head under pressure and I am a good listener supported by my ability to solve problems. I believe my background of managing complex projects with tight deadlines has contributed to my abilities to offer practical solutions to service delivery issues.

“I can be fearless to get to the end-goal, but in a caring way,” said de Beer.

She said the key issues her ward faces are failing infrastructure, continuous service interruptions, illegal dumping and the condition of the parks, open areas and wetlands.

“This all adds up to a community that has been deprived of functional service delivery, infrastructure maintenance and infrastructure upgrades,” said de Beer.

She said the past year there have been regular power outages which has created headaches and uncertainty for both residents and business owners in the ward.

“I will continue to hold the mayor and mayoral committee responsible until a clear plan with timelines and committed budget is presented to the community of Ward 39, especially to the business owners and stakeholders in Wadeville. Millions of rands are lost in productivity, leading to job losses that have a direct impact on the economy and the community of the ward,” said de Beer.

She is working on getting the community involved in reporting service delivery issues.

“My goal is to foster a sense of community involvement to encourage people to report service delivery problems to the City immediately using one of the social media platforms available.”

She encouraged the community to get involved in what is happening in their area.

“Get involved in your community, know your neighbours, care for your suburb by reporting all issues that include water leaks, power outages, street lights not working, potholes, illegal dumping, lack of maintenance of parks, sewerage blockages and leaks into the stormwater systems. The more the residents report, the sooner the City will allocate the necessary resources to fix and maintain issues within the ward,” said de Beer.

“I am always ready and willing to assist the community.”
