Home in need of a helping hand

Chubby Chums for the Children's Homes has been continuing with their work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chubby Chums for the Children’s Homes has been continuing with their work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It has not been easy during lockdown as the organisation runs a number of outreach programmes in the informal settlement of Germiston.

Like many NGOs, the home has been in need of donations to make sure they are able to continue their services.

Chubby Chums was established in 1999 to help address the needs of the many children left destitute by poverty, disease and abuse.

The home was started by Martin Barnard and Tony Graham.

Chubby Chums has grown to incorporate 36 children’s homes in Gauteng, with the head office in Primrose.

Helping children has always been Barnard’s calling.

His love for children is what inspired him to start a home.

The home provides for different cases, like abandoned, physically and sexually abused children.

It also supports and helps HIV/Aids mothers, children and orphans.

The home works closely with the department of welfare and feeds 4 500 vulnerable mothers and children.

They have a feeding scheme and issue food parcels, as well as emergency food parcels after hours.

They also run outreach programmes, a soup kitchen and vegetable gardens.
