Dispute over UIF TERS fund applications reason for workers’ protest

Workers were stationed outside the shop waiting on discussions with employers and representatives on Thursday.

Pick n Pay in Primrose was closed on July 30 due to a salary dispute raised by workers.

Workers were stationed outside the shop waiting on discussions with employers and representatives on Thursday.

“About 33 workers have been laid off for four months with no pay, since May 11,” said shop steward Innocent Kgafela.

“The employer said they will apply for the Covid-19 Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) TERS Fund for all workers, which workers have not received.

“Our debit orders are bouncing, we can’t go and live in the streets while we say we are employed,” said Kgafela.

“We checked with the UIF and found that the applications have not yet been processed. The workers believe the employer has not applied for the fund while laid-off employees are getting deep into debt.”

“The franchise owner Semos Georgiades said: “Unfortunately, our franchise store had to end the employment of some of our staff in May.

“This decision was not taken lightly. The necessary applications for UIF and TERS were completed for all staff timeously,” said Georgiades.

No further comment was received from the employer regarding the dispute.
