For the love of the elderly and vetkoek

Rest-a-While Service Centre for the Elderly raised funds to continue to help the elderly through a vetkoek sale on Friday.

The Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown have put strain on individuals, families, companies and community organisations.

In a bid to raise funds lost during the lockdown so that it can continue serving the elderly in need, Rest-a-While Service Centre for the Elderly held a vetkoek sale on Friday.

The centre made and sold 250 vetkoeks filled with mince during the fund-raising initiative.

“The fund-raiser went very well,” said the centre’s manager, Trudy Carreira.

“We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors – Cherrywood Estates, Circinus Security Primrose, EMRS Emergency Response Services and Mamba Security’s Red Bin Brigade.”

Trudy explained that Cherrywood Estates donated the money the centre needed to buy the delicious vetkoeks from community member Christine Niebuhr, who has her own home-cooked meal business in Primrose.

While Circinus Security Primrose and Mamba Security’s Red Bin Brigade donated 10kg of mince each, Circinus Security Primrose also donated mixed vegetables, potatoes and onions.

The funds raised from the initiative will be used in the centre’s continued efforts to support the elderly in need within the community.

“The funds will also help us find our feet after a tough lockdown,” said Trudy.

Moving forward the centre is looking for a worthy organisation which is in need of blankets.

“Our elderly members have knitted 50 beautiful blankets which we would love to donate to a worthy cause,” said Trudy.

“We are also appealing to the community to donate wool to the centre so that our members can continue knitting blankets for those in need.”

Another item on the centre’s wishlist is shade netting, as the shade netting that once covered their carports was stolen during lockdown.

“If the community would like to make a donation of any kind or nominate a charity to receive our blankets they can contact me,” said Trudy.

Trudy once again appealed to the community to help the centre’s members by sponsoring a meal.

“We have a huge need for sponsorship for meals,” she said.

“Our Adopt-a-Granny Project is also still running and if anyone can help we ask them to do so.”

The community is reminded that the centre has launched its annual winter food drive and hopes to collect food which can make up food parcels for needy members.

“Please help us collect blankets, non-perishable groceries, tinned food, coffee, tea, powdered milk and toiletries for both men and women so we can make winter hampers for our needy elderly.

“Let’s all open our hearts and share the gift of giving,” said Trudy.
