A baby shower with a twist

Family and friends celebrated the imminent arrival of baby Donnalee with an unconventional baby shower.

Weeks before the arrival of a baby most families would be celebrating with a fun-filled baby shower.

A baby shower that would give family and friends a chance to not only celebrate with the parents-to-be, but also spoil the little one on the way.

However, for Adri and Donavan Marais the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown put a halt to any conventional plans they had to celebrate the arrival of their second child.

“Originally we planned a watermelon-themed baby shower to celebrate Donnalee’s arrival.

“Donnalee is due via caesarean section on June 19.

“We had invited 45 guests for the event, which was due to take place on May 9,” explained Adri’s mother, Corné Botha.

Sadly, due to the lockdown rules and regulations this had to be cancelled.

“When we realised there wouldn’t be a traditional baby shower we, as a family, were worried because at that stage you also were unable to buy baby clothing,” Corné said.

“We first thought of just giving Adri and Donavan the money we would have spent on the baby shower, but then we decided on a better idea.”

Corné explained she saw the idea for a drive-through baby shower on Facebook.

“Our friends and family were excited to get involved,” she explained.

The baby shower was held last Saturday in Elsburg, and Donavan met the convoy to help decorate all the vehicles with pink balloons before they drove to the family’s home.

“For Adri’s safety everyone involved was asked to remember to practise social distancing,” said Corné.

After the baby shower Adri said she had no idea that the family were planning something so special.

Adri said she was so surprised to see the convoy of vehicles approaching the house.

“Despite what is going on around us, friends and family still made the effort to make the day possible and special.

“This was a very unique and amazing baby shower.

“It was truly a historical event that I can tell my daughter about one day.”
