Though the Melville Koppies are closed to the community during lockdown the nature reserve and Johannesburg City Heritage Site can still be explored through its Facebook page.
Melville Koppies is a nature reserve and a Johannesburg City Heritage Site.
It is the last conserved remnant of Johannesburg’s ridges as they were before the discovery of gold in 1886.
The vegetation of the koppies is entirely indigenous and is a remarkable example of the richness of Highveld grasses, flowers, and trees so close to a city centre.
These ridges have looked like this for hundreds of years.

Before lockdown the Melville Koppies held guided tours and hikes on Sundays, and though currently closed to the public, Wendy Carstens, the chairperson of the Melville Koppies management committee shared stories about it with the public on the koppies’ Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pg/melvillekoppies/posts/).
The snippets will keep the community entertained and informed. It includes a little of everything, from birds, to walking boots, to bridges, to flowers – they’re all there.
