When it comes to protecting your family and your belongings, you can’t be too careful.

There are plenty of ways you can protect your family, vehicles and your home against crime.

Mamba Security has compiled several safety tips to help combat crime in the area.

Top tips to prevent hijackings:

• Stay alert:

Be vigilant at all times and be aware of your surroundings.

• Space between vehicles:

Keep enough space between your car and others to avoid being trapped and an easy target for hijackers.

• Scout for danger:

Adopt a search pattern radius to scout before approaching your home.

• Suspicious vehicles:

If you are being followed, drive to the nearest public space, like a service station, shopping centre or police station. Don’t go home.

• Escape if you can:

Try to get away from the situation as soon as possible. Your life is worth more than your vehicle.

• Be seen and heard:

Should you see suspicious activity, hoot, scream, blow a whistle and try to attract as much attention as possible.

Top tips to prevent house break-in and theft:

• Close your curtains:

It is recommended that you keep your curtains closed at night to prevent suspects from observing the activity inside your house.

• Lock your garage door:

Do not leave your garage door open or partially open. Make sure your garage door is closed and locked.

• Report it:

Report any suspicious movement that could be a threat to you or your neighbours.

• Lock your gates and doors:

Install security gates and be sure to keep all gates and doors locked.

• Keep the entrance of your property clear:

Keep the entrance to your property and home clear of large plants so that suspects cannot hide.

• Talk to your neighbours:

Build a relationship with your neighbours and let them know when you go away on holiday.
