Simmer tackle their way into new season

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club’s players were excited to get back onto the field for the 2020 season.

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club recently travelled to Springs to take part in the Springs Rugby Club’s Rugby Day.

“This was our first rugby day of the 2020 season and the players were excited to get back onto the field,” said club chairperson René Audier.

The club’s u-20 team got the day underway with a match against Sasolburg Rugby Club.

“The match started slowly as the players are still finding their feet having never played together before,” said Audier.

However, in the second half the team found their rhythm and began to put point after point on the scoreboard.

“They went on to win the match 34–5,” said Audier proudly.

Next onto the field was Simmer’s third team.

They faced Sasolburg Rugby Club’s second team and won the match 41-19.

In the club’s second team match against Boksburg Rugby Club, both teams struggled to take the lead in the tough first half, only scoring a try each.

“The first half was all about defence,” said Audier.

In the second half, Simmer were able to implement their game plan and find more gaps in the Boksburg defence.

This allowed the team to run in three more tries before the final whistle.

They won the match 24-5.

Simmer’s first team also faced Boksburg, a match Audier described as a hard day at the office.

“Boksburg ran in three easy tries in first 10 minutes of play, which really put us on the back foot,” Audier explained.

Despite this the club continued to fight throughout the first half.

In the second half, coach Jean Diemieniet made some changes to the line-up and Simmer were able to score a number of good tries to bring the score within 14 points.

“There was still a chance the team could win,” said Audier.

However, Boksburg were able to run in two more tries before the final whistle, winning the match 57-26.

“We are also calling on anyone interested in becoming a rugby referee, as we will have training courses available.”

Practice sessions will be held at Germiston Stadium on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm.

“Our senior teams will be coached by Diemieniet, Monde Petela, Mosis Venter and Eddie Mathuiysen,” explained Audier.
