Be careful of scammers posing as metro officials

Criminals act as metro officials to rob residents of their money and possessions.

The festive season is approaching and many scammers are sharpening their skills to rob people of their belongings, particularly money.

As such, the metro warns residents to beware of scammers, who are already out there, ready to trick people into giving them money under the pretense that they are metro employees.

Recently, the metro experienced a ransomware attack, which is malicious software used by cyber criminals to either block, or threaten to publish your data, unless a sum of money or ransom is paid.

The most common way ransomware enters corporate networks is through email.

Scammers often include interesting links or attachments in emails that look harmless.

Since the beginning of the year, the metro has been flooded with complaints from people who have been scammed into giving money to people pretending to be municipal officials.

Many victims were made to believe that they had won a tender to supply the city with 240-litre waste wheelie bins, which led them to being lured into depositing large amounts of money into a bank account the scammers claimed belongs to the municipality.

Meanwhile, other residents had strangers walk into their premises posing as metro officials and claiming they are there to monitor water and electricity meter boxes, but instead they get robbed.
