Reclaiming the streets of Elsburg

Residents are determined to reclaim the streets of Elsburg for the community.

“We are taking back the streets of Elsburg.”

These were the stern words of Prince Rulashe ahead of the Elsburg community march against drugs, last Saturday.

“Today we are marching against drugs, as Elsburg has become a drug hub,” said Rulashe.

“We want to eradicate drugs from our area.

“We have seen an increase in drug usage and crime, as drugs and crime go hand-in-hand.

“Once a person starts using they are willing to do anything to support their habit, they steal and commit other crimes.”

The community of Elsburg came together to say enough is enough, in the hope of bringing an end to the scourge of drugs in the area.

“We are here as a community to raise our voices and say no to drugs and away with drugs,” said Rulashe.

“We want a clean Elsburg.

“We want to reclaim our streets.”

This sentiment fits perfectly with the march’s theme, Reclaiming Our Streets and Saying No to Drugs.

The group of residents, and other stakeholders, met at the Elsburg Town Hall before marching down Voortrekker Street.

“Voortrekker Street is a problem street in the area,” explained Rulashe.

“Many drug dealers are known to operate along this street, as well as in Kruger and Van Riebeeck streets.

“We plan to visit all the streets that are known hot spots for drug peddlers and users.”

The community hoped that the march would be the beginning of positive change in the area.

“We know this is not the end, it is only the beginning of the journey,” Rulashe said.

“The community recently met with the Elsburg police’s station commander Col Linah Thethe and shared concerns over the drug issues with her.

“We warned her that we will not tolerate police taking bribes from alleged drug dealers and urged her to help us tackle the drug problem we have in the area.

“We know there is a long road ahead, but we will not stop until the battle is won.”

Ward 39 Clr Alta de Beer also joined the march.

“Residents marched peacefully against the drug dealers who are destroying the lives of our children and tearing families apart,” said de Beer.

“This march sent a firm warning to all the drug dealers in Elsburg that we will not stand by and let this continue.”
