Triathletes test their stamina

Athletes gave it their all in the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni Triathlon, last Sunday.

It was a hot day in the city last Sunday as over 900 athletes tackled the gruelling Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni Triathlon.

The race, the second instalment of the Standard Bank 5150 African Triathlon Series, was part of the iconic Ironman series, one of the world’s most challenging endurance races.

The race, which has started and finished at the lake for several years now, was once again one to remember with athletes starting off with a rolling start swim in windy conditions, which caused choppy waters.

The 20 degree Celsius water temperature and 32 degree Celsius air temperature set the scene for a number of thrilling battles between athletes.

But it was Michael Ferreira and Natalie Sterk who came out on top to win the men’s and women’s races, respectively.

Results in the men’s event:

• Michael Ferreira was the overall winner and first man across the line in a time of one hour, 59 minutes and five seconds.
