Athletes hone their skills at Central Gauteng Athletics track and field meeting

Athletes gave it their all at the Central Gauteng Athletics’ (CGA) first official track and field meeting at Germiston Stadium last Saturday.

Cheers of support filled the air of Germiston Stadium last Saturday as athletes competed in the first official track and field meeting of the 2019/2020 season for Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA).

This was the second athletics event held at the stadium after a development meeting was held on September 21.

The event, which saw athletes from across Gauteng competing, boasted a number of standout performances.

Among these was the great performance of Kieren Louw, of Fitness from Africa Athletics Club, who won the boys’ u-17 100m sprint in an impressive 10.92 seconds.

Another noteworthy performance came in the boys’ u-15 long jump when Germiston-based Diamond Athletics Club athlete Michael Yemurai made a fierce leap of 6.33m to win the event.

Yemurai said he draws his inspiration from fellow athletes Khotso Mokoena and Luvo Manyonga.

Germiston Callies Harriers athletes Victor Spice and Kaylee le Roux claimed victory in the 200m sprints in the u-13 and u-15 age divisions, respectively, winning in times of 24.88 seconds and 26.29 seconds, respectively.

The day’s 1 200m race proved to be one of the toughest and most gruelling events of the meeting; however, Marhu Bouwer, from Roodepoort Athletics Club, and Kayleigh Pienaar, from Noordheuwel Athletics Club, topped the boys’ and girls’ u-11 events in times of three minutes and 49 seconds and four minutes and .05 seconds, respectively.

The last event of the day was the 1 500m race and it had everyone on the edge of their seats.

Elvis Mokhonoana, from Tembisa Athletics Club, did not disappoint and won the race 15 metres ahead of his closest rival in a time of three minutes and 55 seconds.

Mokhonoana previously finished in seventh position in the 1 500m event at the 2019 National Track and Field Championships.
