Paddlers prepare for A-grade river race

Zondi and Cele take spot in recent river race.

Canoeing clubs are preparing for the major A-grade Fish River Canoe Marathon, on white water rapids, in September.

The river race season has kicked off despite the lack of rain which has left the rivers to bake and dry up in the heat of the early spring.

North West University (NWU), based in the Watuni Canoe Club in Vanderbijlpark, recently hosted a 22km river race from Henley on Klip to Meyerton. The race aimed to provide paddlers an opportunity to gain familiarity in white water and gain experience and points for participating in the Fish marathon.

For some paddlers the Fish will be their first A-grade river race with huge white water/rolling wave trains.

For Loveday Zondi and Richard Cele, who are both coaches at Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC), it will be a very competitive opportunity, and they have all the right abilities to obtain an excellent result at the Fish River Canoe Marathon.

They previously finished the NWU Watuni Klip River Race in first place, cruising through any white water rapids and chuckling as they paddled smoothly past other competitors on the flat-water sections.

Their finish time was 1 hour 26 minutes.
