Germiston High gain some international experience

Germiston High School faced visiting Dromore High, from Northern Ireland, in two friendly rugby matches.

Rugby has been slowly gaining popularity at Germiston High School since it was reintroduced in 2016.

Recently the school’s u-15 and u-16 rugby teams faced visiting Dromore High, from Northern Ireland.

The matches were played during Dromore’s tour to South Africa.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity,” said tour manager Gareth Bronte.

“I had travelled to South Africa before, with another school, and knew I’d like to come back.

“This is the first international tour for our teams.”

When asked how the school had decided on Germiston High as their first opponents of the tour, Bronte explained, “Our travel agent actually found them.

“We are so grateful for all the school has done to make us feel welcome and if we can breathe some life into the school’s love of rugby that would be amazing.”

“It really is a wonderful opportunity, experience and celebration of diversity.

“We would love to host more international visitors in the future.”

First to take to the field, to a roar from the supporters, were the u-15 teams.

The team, made up of u-14 and u-15 players, faced a well-structured and quick Irish team.

They were unable to find their way across the try line but made some good tackles and learnt several valuable lessons through the international clash.

The final score was 67-0 in favour of Dromore.

“Though we lost the match we learnt a lot,” said coach Pieter Erwee.

“We learnt things we can take forward and integrate into our game plan to improve our chances in the new season.

“It was a great opportunity for the players and an honour that it was decided that we were a school strong enough to compete against Dromore.”

Germiston was able to get some points on the scoreboard in the u-16s clash, but unfortunately couldn’t top Dromore.

The final score was 48-7.

“We were very excited for the game against Dromore and I feel our nerves got the better of us,” said coach Jody De Matos.

“The Dromore defense was quick and effective as they cut through our attack causing our players to become frustrated as they were unable to convert attack to points.

“Dromore capitalised these breaks in attack and were able to score on this factor.

“Though the Germiston defense was shaken in the first half we found our feet and stood firm in the second half which allowed captain Atlehang Mokutsu a chance to score a penalty try in the dying moments of the game.

“It was great exposure and the boys have learnt a valuable lesson in terms of playing.”
