A unanimous decision at the UN General Assembly led to 10 years of charitable works being rolled out on July 18, known as International Nelson Mandela Day.

The day marks the birth of the late global icon Nelson Mandela and on the day millions across the world gather to keep his legacy of selflessness alive.

A Grade Eight learner at Hawk Academy, Nigel Ranga, helps Abland staff members trace out letters for his school’s new welcome sign on the boundary wall.

To align with the initiative and carry out their 67 minutes dedicated to the aid of the needy, Abland and Abcon Group Foundation (AGF), along with a number of their associates like Craft Homes and Eris Properties, took to Hawk Academy on Thursday for a day of cheer and much-needed support for the school.

“We organised wall painting for the school’s boundary wall to bring colour to the school,” said Kelly Maphuma, marketing coordinator for AGF.

“With our gardening project, we managed to plant 40 trees at the school.

“Furthermore, our staff members ran an internal clothing and blanket drive to distribute to the children.”

The learners joined in the festivities by reciting poetry inspired by Madiba’s life, singing and a classic dance-off.

Abland and AGF spend most social event dates at the school and strive to assist the school with infrastructure development and maintenance while assisting the learners and the surrounding communities with basic needs, food and clothing.

Lucky Leshika from Abcon Group Foundation thinks yellow paint would make Hawk Academy stand out from its industrial surroundings as he happily applies it to the boundary wall.

“Mandela spent 67 years in prison fighting for our human rights; we are only required to give 67 minutes of our time to help others. It’s a vast difference in time, but we can bring change and offer help where we can every day,” said Maphuma.
