Ensuring a warmer winter for learners in wheelchairs

Sock drive aimed at creating a warmer winter for learners in wheelchairs.

As temperatures drop in winter, those in wheelchairs run the risk of developing frostbite on their feet or possibly hypothermia.

Knowing this, staff members of Ithembelihle Lsen School donated money to run a sock drive at their school on Friday morning to bring warmth to learners in wheelchairs this winter.

“When a learner develops frostbite and it worsens, it develops into blisters, which over time require the child to be admitted to hospital,” said Leonor Ngozi, principal of Ithembelihle Lsen School.

“Often times, severe frostbite ends up looking like burn wounds.

“The health of our learners is a priority and we want to avoid that this year.”

The sock drive afforded 144 learners two pairs of socks each to keep the frostbite at bay, and forms part of the school’s 67 minutes in celebration of Mandela Day.
