Germiston residents struggle through the darkness

Germiston residents frustrated as prolonged power outages continue to affect the city.

Many Germiston residents have been left in the darkness once again.

Over the past few weeks, many suburbs in Germiston have once again been plagued with outages, with a number of residents having reported outages lasting days at a time – with no feedback from the metro on the cause or when power will be restored.

“Germiston and the surrounding areas have been hit by persistent power outages following the failure of a substation in Wadeville,” said Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer.

“This has had a domino effect as overloading of the already delicate grid has triggered outages in neighbouring suburbs, like Dinwiddie, Mimosa, Lambton, Parkhill Gardens, Delville and Elsburg.

“While the transformer is Eskom’s responsibility, we are concerned that the repair could take up to six weeks due to the costs involved and the repair time needed.”

De Beer further urged all residents and businesse to keep the load balanced during the two peak periods daily (namely 7am to 9am and 4pm to 7pm) by implementing energy saving measures – for the next six weeks.

“We have also been in contact with MMC Dora Mlambo, who is responsible for service delivery in Germiston,” said de Beer.

“She agrees that the current situation is unacceptable and is open to discussing the way forward.

“This matter has also been referred to the Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry in Parliament to alert the Department of Trade and Industry of the power issues in Wadeville and surrounds as they could lead to a potential economic crisis.”

The LamDel Residents Association (RA) shared the following statement on their Facebook page, “We have no indication what time to expect the power back,” wrote Lornette Joseph (chairperson).

“We do know that it’s not only Ward 39, but the problem is within Ward 37, Ward 36 and Ward 40 areas.

“As you can all see during the day, power has been coming on and off, with this being said we need to continue to keep major appliances off as much as possible.”

Further feedback from the metro stated that a change over will take place this morning (Wednesday), which will result in Mimosa, Dinwiddie, Castleview, Stone Arch, a portion of Wadeville and surrounding areas being without power.

“Power should be fully restored around noon to all affected areas including Lambton,” said Themba Gadebe, the spokesperson of the metro.

Updates to follow as more information becomes available.
